GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF PHYLUM NEMERTEA

Organisms in the phylum nemertea are also called RIBBON WORMS.


GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF RIBBON WORMS
These organisms are classified under the organ level. This means they possess some organs which are modified for specific functions.
They are bilaterally symmetrical.
They are triploblastic. This means they possess three main body layers, the endoderm, mesoderm and the ectoderm.
Possess proboscis to capture prey.
They are acoelomates. They don"t possess coelom.
They possess rynchocoel, a long hollow tube lying in a cavity.
Reproduction is both sexual and asexual. They undergo sexual reproduction when it is gonochoristic and asexual by fragmentation.
They can be aquatic or terrestrial
It has a well developed nervous system with a brain.
It is dorsoventrally flattened.
It has a complete digestive system. This means it has two openings which can be referred to as mouth and anus.
They possess a blood system with blood vessels.
